Early Childhood Trauma Project
I took part in the Psychology Work Experience Project during the spring term. Based on my application, I was assigned to a project working with an independent school for vulnerable children and young people.
This project’s primary goals are as follows:
Provide evidence-based information on the effects of early childhood trauma on learning and behaviours;
Explore the current research on trauma-informed care and its effectiveness in educational settings;
Provide a range of evidence-based management frameworks for trauma-informed environments;
Raise awareness and understanding of the importance of trauma-informed care and its benefits for students, staff, and caregivers.
Our team consists of 6 members, and together we created a booklet that can be used for their staff induction. Thanks to this project, I had the chance to practice and deepen my project management skills from previous employment and experiences. More details on how I managed this project are below.
Project Management
I often create a Masterplan spreadsheet to keep track of the progress and task for the project. This document became an essential part of any project I've worked on. A meticulous plan works for me for several reasons:
Serves as a roadmap and provides a high-level overview & clear vision of the project;
Defines the scope of the project, this helps the team to stay focused and ensure everyone is working towards the same end goal;
Establishes a clear timeline and milestones for each phase of the project, which helps to keep the project on track and ensure the key deliverables are completed on time;
Identify resource requirements and pinpoint any obstacles that need to be dealt with in a timely manner;
Enables effective risk management, which helps the team to speculate any potential difficulties or issues, and therefore develop appropriate strategies to mitigate them.
As part of the management for this project, I also helped my team to create a consistently-formated meeting minute document. This type of document helps our team and I to:
Record the decisions and discussions made in weekly team meetings;
Keep members of the team accountable and aware of their responsibilities and commitments;
Serve as a valuable communication tool between team members;
Reference for future meetings, ensure the past decisions are not forgotten and overlooked;
Maintain the focus of the meeting by setting clear agenda.
Project Outcomes
The booklet on Early Childhood Trauma is the end product of the project.
It covers a wide range of subtopics concerning early childhood trauma and trauma-informed practices.
The main aim is to provide the school with a valuable resource that supports its effort to create a trauma-sensitive and inclusive learning environment.
